The western side of the city centre doubles as the Roman birthplace of Manchester and the original home of modern industry. Here amongst the Roman ruins is the country’s first canal, a weigh house from where people could emigrate to America, the world’s first and oldest railway station, stupendous railway viaducts, secluded waterways, quaint cobbles, the most sprawling of museums and a graveyard full of surprises.
