What’s the catch?
Nothing. However if at the end of the tour you think the guide has gone that little bit further to entertain and inform you, please do drop a few shekels into their hat. If you don’t think they’ve done a good job, they might tip you!
The theory behind it goes like this: if customers have pre-paid there’s a slight concern that the guide has received their money and doesn’t have to try. They might take the lazy way out and tell you the name “Manchester” comes from the Roman Mamucium, or that Rolls met Royce at the Midland Hotel, or some such other nonsense.
However if the guide hasn’t been paid they’ve got to do the business to impress – with wonderful anecdotes, quality quips and a general sense of bonhomie. That way the customer will return.
