John Rylands Library tours are back!

The work on making the Library look beautiful again is over, and we have been invited to resume our unique tours: “John Rylands Library and More”.

So tickets are now available for booking for the first John Rylands Library tours for nearly a year!

Must be booked on Eventbrite, as we can only take 30.

* Wed 16 July, 11.15am.

* Thu 7 August, 11.15am.

These tours start from outside St Ann’s Church.

We like to give extra value, so we meet outside St Ann’s Church to link John Rylands himself with the cotton industry, through which he became Manchester’s first millionaire in the 19th century, and by which the city itself was the centre of the world textile industry.

When we get to Rylands we marvel at the architecture, outline the detailed history of John and Enriqueta Rylands themselves, how their company rose to the top, and explain why the lauded figures in the Reading Room have been chosen for statues.

Behind this are some of the most fascinating stories in British history – the legacy of Francis Bacon, instrumental in making Britain great; John Wycliffe, who challenged the power of the Church; William Tyndale, perhaps England’s greatest ever writer…
