It was a land of dismal grey plastic-concrete crescents where the sun never shone, no one paid their rent, and everyone was on the “soshe”.
The council had obliterated the back-to-back terraced houses and the workshops (such as the one where Rolls Royce made their earliest engines) to build what soon became a dystopian wasteland. But just when it was beginning to work, with a micro-society of quirky bands and oddball characters, the council knocked it down again.
