The city is essentially a Victorian creation. This was when Manchester was a new phenomenon that shocked the world – an unprecedented commercially and industrial metropolis. It attracted the great names of the era – Prince Albert, Richard Cobden, Benjamin Disraeli, Elizabeth Gaskell, William Gladstone, William Morris, John Ruskin … – who came here to marvel, complain, pontificate, protest and make money.
