What fun it must have been travelling from Manchester to London by stagecoach in the 18th century. You had to leave at 5am from the Bridgewater Arms (where Debenham’s is now) and three or four days later, if you hadn’t been attacked by footpads or highwaymen, would roll up at the Carter Lane terminus, in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral.

And they moan about spending 2 hrs 10 minutes on the train now!
