We are now running a regular free tour of the Georgian jewel that is the Portico Library and the streets of Chinatown outside.

New Manchester Walks’s Ed Glinert will unravel the history of this enticing enclave of Manchester, once the Georgian estate of St James’s, explaining how it seemingly seamlessly metamorphosed first into a land of cotton showrooms and intensive industry in the 19th century and in the late 20th century into Chinatown, with stories of the fine folk that filled its features: John Dalton who devised atomic theory on George Street right behind the Library and Charles Barry who designed the Royal Manchester Institution (now the Art Gallery) in a Greek style he abhorred.

And that’s where we start – at the Art Gallery with a trip around the Georgian streets before heading into the princely Portico for a detailed look at its history and some of its rarities.

To book on, please see the Portico Library’s website: http://www.theportico.org.uk/
